"Don’t touch the art."
It’s the first thing we learn about visiting a museum -- but what happens when art is designed not only for touch, but for interaction and participation? What happens when the artist deliberately invites viewers into the work, allowing them to become active participants in the creative process?
Since the 1970s, these questions have intrigued and challenged contemporary artists, whose creative responses continue to stretch the boundaries of how we understand visual art and the role of the viewer.
The Fine Arts Center’s pARTicipation exhibit brings together 9 West Coast artists whose work invites viewers to touch, alter, interact, or participate. At some times playful, at other times poignant, this exhibition encourages viewers to become involved in the creative process, forging new and unexpected relationships with the artwork and with one another.
Curated by Gallery & Program Director, Sarah Jane, MFA.
The exhibition runs May 4 - June 30, 2019. Hours: Thurs - Sun 11am - 5pm. The gallery is free by donation.
